Overview of Business Sentiment Indices 

What it means?

The BSIs are compiled by CBSL to grasp the business condition for the current quarter and the outlook for the following quarter by conducting a survey on entrepreneurs’ perception.

Who is surveyed?

The sample of enterprises was selected using judgmental sampling method with stratification based on sectoral contribution to the GDP. The latest survey for the 3rd quarter of 2018, which was carried out during 25th September 2018 to 15th November 2018, covered around 100 respondents.

How it is compiled?

BSIs were calculated using the method introduced by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) manual as follows,

 

 Xi takes values of +1, 0 or -1 depending on the answer given by enterprise i

 

n is the number of reporting units in the  sector sample

  

Where Wk: kth sector's GDP weight 

Interpretation 

Compiled BSIs will consists of values ranging from 0 to 200 where the general interpretation is as follows,

BSI=100 means business sentiment is unchanged

BSI>100 means business sentiment has improved

BSI<100 means business sentiment has worsen
