The Sri Lanka Purchasing Managers’ Index for Construction (PMI – Construction), as reflected by the Total Activity Index, recorded 57.8 in September. This indicates continued growth in construction activities, supported by a sustained flow of new construction projects. However, the shortage of bitumen remained a major constraint, delaying several road construction projects.
The New Orders Index expanded at a higher pace, primarily underpinned by government-funded projects. Concurrently, the Employment Index grew at a moderate rate, reflecting ongoing recruitments supported by steady project availability, although many firms continued to cite shortages of skilled workers. The Quantity of Purchases Index increased at a higher rate, reflecting procurement requirements for ongoing and newly awarded projects. Meanwhile, Suppliers’ Delivery Times lengthened further, reflecting sustained supply-side pressures.
Expectations for construction activity over the next three months remained positive, underpinned by newly awarded projects, despite ongoing challenges with material and skilled labor availability.
