Regional Office - Killinochchi

Governor, together with senior officials of the Central Bank visited Northern Province to explore suitable solutions for issues in micro finance sector on 07 and 08 September 2020. In relation to that Regional Office – Kilinochchi of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka has been arranged a series of meetings with various groups of stake holders and representatives in Northern Province.

Accordingly, a discussion with the Northern Governor Mrs. P S M Charles at her office on 07 September 2020 was started the series of meeting. Several discussions with District Secretaries, Senior Government Officials, Divisional Secretaries, Northern Regional Heads of Financial Institutions, Representatives of selected micro finance institutions, Representatives of Co-operative Rural Banks and Representatives of civil societies of all five districts of Northern Province are taken place on 07 and 08 September 2020.

In addition, Governor and senior officials of the Central Bank visited to meet successful entrepreneurs in Jaffna & Kilinochchi as a part of the visit. (Tastra Industries, Jaffna and Possible Green (Pvt) Ltd, Kilinochchi).

Five Sub-Help Desks are in operation at District Secretariats in all five Districts of Northern Province in addition to the Help Desk available at Regional Office – Kilinochchi with a view to guide and assist public on financial aspects.

A webinar was conducted on ‘Compilation of National Accounts’ with the collaboration of Economic Research Department and Centre for Banking Studies on 18 September 2020 for A/L Economics teachers in Northern Province. 133 teachers attended the webinar. The resource person of the webinar was Mr. M Kesavaraja, Senior Economist, Economic Research Department, Central Bank of Sri Lanka.

Another webinar was conducted on ‘Digital Future of Payments in Sri Lanka’ with the collaboration of Payments and Settlements Department and Centre for Banking Studies on 09 December 2020 for officials of Licensed Commercial and Specialised Banks in Northern Province. 80 officers from banks actively participated and benefitted from the webinar. The resource person of the webinar was Mr. P G G N Rupasinghe, Senior Assistant Director, Payments and Settlements Department, Central Bank of Sri Lanka.

The first time in history, with the intension of reducing coins shortage in the region, standard coins were directly distributed by the Central Bank to the commercial banks’ branches located in Northern Province. Currency Department enabled all banks functioning in North to collect coins at the Regional Office – Kilinochchi in order to distribute to the general Public.

3,664,000 number of coins worth of Rs. 20.578 million distributed on 18 January 2018 and 3,040,000 number of coins worth of Rs.17.044 million again distributed on 29 November 2018 at the Regional Office – Kilinochchi.

Regional Office – Kilinochchi of Central Bank of Sri Lanka successfully conducted a webinar on ‘Impacts of COVID 19 on businesses and the ways to overcome’ on 08 January 2021 and Dr. L Sritharan, Deputy Director, Macroprudential Surveillance Department, Central Bank of Sri Lanka was contributed as resource person. Businessmen, Entrepreneurs and general public actively participated and benefitted from the webinar and the recording has been uploaded on the official Facebook page of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka for the interested beneficiaries.
