Library & Information Centre

The Bank's Library was upgraded to a Library and Information Centre (LIC) in 2002. The Library and Information Centre mainly focuses on providing the information needs of CBSL employees. In addition, the LIC assists the country's research community to access information related to economics and banking

Organisation Structure
The LIC is a separate unit under the Department of Communications of the Bank. There are 3 main functional divisions and 2 support service sections. These are:

Collection Development Division
Mainly responsible for procurement of information sources and facilitating access to online information.

Organising Division
Responsible for preserving and organising the information sources for easy access.

Dissemination Division
Responsible for dissemination of current information, circulation of information sources, literature searches and user education.

Lending Section
Staff members are allowed to borrow books and other library material from this section for a limited period.

Reference Section
Equipped with ready reference sources, reports, periodicals and a set of selected books on relevant subject areas.

In addition to the main reference section, reference material could be obtained from the following:

  • Newspaper Reading Room
  • Desamanya N.U. Jayawardene Reading Room
  • Internet Access Bay
Library Collection
At present the LIC holds nearly 40,000 publications comprising 20,000 monographs (books) and 20,000 reports and annual reports of other central banks and international organisations. It also has over 20,000 journal issues under more than 200 journal titles. The majority of the collection is in English. There are also special collections such as the Sri Lanka Collection and CBSL publications collection. In addition, the LIC holds a collection of over 1,000 CD-ROMs of world statistics, economics and business data and CDs of newly published books, as well. The LIC also subscribes to online journals, databases and online information services related to economics, banking and finance.

Services
The main services targeting the internal staff are:
  • Lending of library materials.
  • Reference services and literature searching on user inquiries
  • Daily distribution of local newspapers and journals among departments and senior staff.
  • Providing online access to the library catalogue (OPAC), selected journals, selected databases and web sites.
  • Provision of current news, documents, articles, etc.
  • Provision of Internet access facilities.
  • Providing links with both local and foreign libraries for resource sharing.
  • Intranet web site of LIC.

Regulations
Rules and Regulations on lending library material and serving the external research community are defined by a set of guidelines.

Membership Links
LIC is the focal point of eBanklibNetSL, the Economics and Banking LIC Network of Sri Lanka. It is also a member of the group of Central Bank Libraries. The LIC participates in the project of Union Catalogue of Sri Lanka National Library and Documentation Services Board.

Library Hours
The Library is open to the staff and authorised researchers from 08.00 a.m to 04.00 p.m for borrowing and till 6.00 p.m. for reference on all weekdays. It is closed on week-ends and holidays. External users are requested to obtain prior approval to visit the LIC from the Chief Librarian.
